APC Mourns Audu, Restates Faith In Rule Of Law

Sahara Reporters Media

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed its grief over Prince Abubakar Audu, its candidate in Saturday’s Kogi State gubernatorial contest who died suddenly yesterday on the very day he seemed to be winning the governorship for the second time.

In a statement signed by National Secretary Mai Mala Buni, the party described Audu as “one of our stars, a democrat par excellence, a  development-oriented leader and a beacon  for the liberation of Kogi State from its apparent decay,” adding, “He was a Prince of hope, a symbol of peace and an apostle of unity and reintegration of Kogi State.” Commiserating with his family and the people of Kogi State for their strong belief in Audu's capacity to redeem the state, APC said his death had created a big vacuum in the State but that it takes solace in the fact that God gives and God takes.

It said the former governor might have physically transited but will forever be spiritually and politically relevant in the state and in the country. “We appeal to the people of the state to see Audu's death as an act of God,” the statement said.  “There should be no recourse to lawlessness or vindictiveness in whatever form. The only honour will can do Prince Abubakar Audu is to remain peaceful and resolve to be undaunted in preserving the adorable ideals he lived for. It was evident to all that he ran a good race, he played his part well and he earned a rare rating as an exemplary leader.”

The party pledged not to abandon Prince Audu even in death, saying his legacies, virtues and vision are timeless. It urged its members and supporters in Kogi Stare and nationwide not to allow their spirit to be dampened by the sudden passage of Prince Abubakar Audu, but instead to be united in mourning, and encouraged to effect the desired change in Kogi through the ballot. “On INEC's position that the November 21, 2015 governorship poll in Kogi State was inconclusive, APC is studying  the declaration of the Returning Officer, Prof. Emmanuel Kucha, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, based on Section M, Paragraph 4 (Page 22) of INEC Approved Guidelines and Regulations for the Conduct of the 2015 General Elections,” the statement continued, stressing that the party believes in the rule of law, as well as strict adherence to the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010.

“Our government was a product of the rule of law, we have absolute faith in the nation's law and we will not in any manner undermine the law,” it further stated, adding that its observations and position will be within the laws of the land. It described the situation in Kogi State as a test case for the rule of law and the country’s growing democracy, and that APC is committed to its pledge to ensure a sustainable democracy.

Following the ministerial nomination, Senate careening and expected inauguration of the Group Managing Director (GMD), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu as a member of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, there are indications that President Buhari has begun moves for Kachikwu’s replacement as the NNPC boss.
Sources revealed that Buhari’s choice has already landed on three persons, including the Deputy Managing Director of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), Alhaji Isa Mohammed Inuwa.
Kachikwu, who was appointed by the President on August 5th as the chief executive of the NNPC, making him the 17th Group Managing Director of the Corporation is among the 36 ministerial nominees cleared by the Senate. He is expected to emerge as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources as the president has said he would oversee the ministry as petroleum minister.
However, before joining NLNG, Inuwa was Group General Manager Corporate Services in NNPC.
According to the sources, the president was looking for Kachikwu’s replacement, as the NNPC head could not combine being a minister and NNPC’s GMD. He said that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has been mandated to review the profiles of the three nominees for the position of the GMD of NNPC and make a recommendation to the president.
“The president would replace the NNPC GMD any moment from now. As you know, he has been nominated for ministerial job and cleared.
“The Office of the SGF has been asked to look at the profile of the three nominees for the job. I don’t know the names of the other two, but l can confirm to you that the DMD of the NLNG, Isa Mohammed Inuwa, is been favoured for the job,” the source stated.

Garo explained that the intentions of the house was to bring an end to the despoliation of the Niger Delta environment through burning of equipment confiscated from illegal operators of refineries.
He said the JTF, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, and affected communities had been invited to testify.

Hold Shell accountable for oil spills, AI tells FG

Adelani Adepegba, Abuja..PUNCH

Amnesty International has asked the Federal Government to hold Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd., accountable for oil spills in the Niger Delta.
The human rights group said the FG is failing to fulfill its duty to protect the rights of the people living in the Niger Delta, including making sure they enjoy their right to a remedy and proper clean up of oil spills.

Presenting the report, “Clean it up: Shell’s alleged false claims about oil spills response in Niger Delta,” on Tuesday in Abuja, AI Business and Human Rights Researcher, Mark Dummett said Shell had a responsibility to ensure that its actions did not cause or contribute to human rights violations.
The report which was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1995 execution of environmental activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa, documents the failure of the government to regulate the oil industry as well as the inability of its watchdog, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency to police the oil industry effectively.
It noted that in 2011, the United Nations Environmental Programme  exposed massive levels of pollution caused by oil spills from Shell pipelines in the Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta, adding that in response, Shell promised to clean up the sites identified by UNEP and improve its response to future spills.
“Yet in field investigations at four of the spill sites UNEP identified as highly polluted in 2011, Amnesty International and the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and development found all four remain visibly contaminated in 2015, though Shell says it has cleaned them; the investigation demonstrates this is due to inadequate clean-up, not new oil spills,” the report stated.
At one of the spills locations, Shell’s Bomu Well 11, AI said its researchers found blackened soil and layers of oil on the water, 45 years after an oil spill took place, “even though Shell claimed to had cleaned it up twice in 1975, and 2021.”
AI insisted that Shell must heed the advice of the UN’s experts, by changing its approach to oil spill remediation and begin to clean up properly.
