The
Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday
received Senator Ayo Akinyelure and Dr Pius Osunyikanmi after announcing
the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the
weekend.
The party, in a statement issued and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Steve Otaloro, said the defection should serve as an encouragement and an eye opener to all progressives still in the PDP.
The party saluted the courage and resolve of the decampees to align with the change agenda of the APC-led Federal Government and work with others in the party to effect the necessary change in the administration of Ondo State.
“As a party poised to take government in Ondo State and change the socio-economic fortunes of the citizenry of the state, their decision to join hands with us is a morale booster. We assure them that the APC in the state is open, ready and prepared to accept them into its fold and treat them with all the respect they deserve,” the statement read in part.
The two defectors, who were former supporters Governor Olusegun Mimiko, announced the decision to dump the PDP for the APC in a statement jointly signed by them and made available to newsmen at the weekend.
Senator Akinyelure represented Ondo Central, Mimiko’s Senatorial District in the seventh National Assembly, while Osunyikanmi was the governor’s Personal Assistant when he was Commissioner for Health under the late Governor Adebayo Adefarati.
He also served the governor in other capacities such as Special Assistant, Senior Special Assistant and Commissioner for Education.
He was Special Adviser on International Relations to former President Goodluck Jonathan before becoming the Director-General of the Technical Aids Corp.
Akinyelure and Osunyikami, in the statement, said they left the PDP with their supporters because of the need to support the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
Part of the statement reads: “The mood in Ondo State, as clearly expressed in the last general election, shows that the people truly want a change. In spite of the fact that we have a PDP government in the state, our people voted massively for President Buhari of the APC. That situation has not changed. In fact, the calls for total change at all levels of governance in the state are getting more stringent due to the failure of the PDP-led state government to deliver democracy dividends to the people.
“Our journey of change has just begun with this epic declaration. We shall keep you abreast of other milestones as history unfolds in Ondo State politics.”
But in a swift reaction, the Ondo State chapter of the PDP said the two defectors who were truly acolytes of Governor Mimiko had begun a journey into political irrelevance.
